LESSON PLANS WEEK of 9/20/21-9/24/21...

Monday, Sept. 20...

English…

QUICK WRITE - Students will be instructed on how to properly create a prewriting web on the topic of some of their favorite things to do. After reading the first two essays, I need to slow things down and take a very step-by-step approach. All students are to only do is the web for today and submit it through their Google Classroom assignment.

PLANS - I will have students fill out a Google Form stating their Renaissance Project choice. Students should have submitted vocabulary lesson 3 through their Google Classroom for grading. Students will then receive notes on the steps to becoming a knight and the parts of armor.

NOTES -

Page - approximately age 6-7 years old; serve their assigned knight: served meals, cleaned his clothes and armor, and carried messages; learned the proper way to behave and good manners; began to train to fight with "toy" weapons; started to learn how to ride a horse using no hands and carrying a lance.

Squire - approximately age 14-15; take care of the knight's horses, help his knight to dress in armor, clean and sharpen weapons, accompany the knight to the battlefield; trained with real weapons; taught fighting skills by their knight; continued to practice their horsemanship, perfecting their skills at jousting and fighting from the saddle.

Dubbing Ceremony - age of 18-21; bathed; dressed in white robe (purity of body and mind) with a brown cloth belt (not afraid to return to the earth) and red sash (blood shed for his king/church); fasted for 24-48 hours; kneel before the Bishop who would then tap the squire on the shoulder with his sword making him a knight; the new knight would take an oath to honor and protect his king and the church. He would be presented with his armor, a pair of riding spurs, and a sword.

Interesting Facts about Becoming a Knight

  • Squires often learned about castle and siege warfare from their knight. They would need to know how to defend their own castle as well as how to attack an enemy's castle.
  • The word "squire" comes from a French word meaning "shield-bearer."
  • Wealthy knights would have had several pages and squires to assist them.
  • Squires would practice jousting using a wooden dummy called a quintain.
  • Not all squires were made knights through an elaborate ceremony. Some were awarded knighthood on the battlefield in special circumstances.
